FLA has announced that the nomination process is now open for the next independent chair of the FLA Board of Directors. As the current chair, Michael Posner, prepares to complete his service, FLA is looking for its next chair, who will build on Mr. Posner’s record of leadership and his stewardship of FLA’s unique role in advancing human rights at work.

FLA’s board is made up of equal representation from civil society, universities, and business, with an independent chair. The next chair will serve a three-year term, which may be renewed.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Leading FLA’s board in its ongoing deliberations, decision-making, and execution of its duties, including chairing board meetings
  • Chairing FLA’s executive committee
  • Providing strategic insight, partnering with FLA’s president and CEO to steer the work of the organization
  • Working with board representatives from each caucus and from around the world to build consensus on key board decisions
  • Serving as an important public face of the organization and participating in targeted engagement with key audiences and partners, including targeted recruitment meetings, engagement with relevant global organizations, and engagement with funders

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A demonstrated commitment to FLA’s mission of promoting adherence to international labor standards and improving working conditions worldwide
  • Relevant experience and expertise, including an understanding of key issues FLA addresses and the global nature of FLA’s work
  • Stature in the human rights community and with key audiences
  • A demonstrated ability to build consensus across diverging viewpoints
  • A record of strategic leadership

The chair may expect to devote an average of five hours per month to the role, in addition to two in-person board and member convenings each year, a standing yearly virtual board meeting, and ad hoc meetings as necessary. All necessary travel-related expenses will be reimbursed. The role is uncompensated.
