Fair Labor Association condemns murder of union leaders in Honduras / La Fair Labor Association condena el asesinato de dirigentes sindicales en Honduras

WASHINGTON, DC, June 28, 2023 — The Fair Labor Association (FLA) condemns the murder of four union leaders from the Sindicato de Trabajadores de Gildan San Miguel (SITRAGSAM) on June 24 in Choloma, Honduras.

The union leaders were SITRAGSAM President Xiomara Beatriz Cocas, former President Delmer Josué García, Delegate José Rufino Ortiz, and Delegate Lester Arnulfo Almendarez. Eduardo Alexander Meléndez, the son of Ms. Cocas, also was killed in the attack, along with eight others.

FLA expresses its condolences to SITRAGSAM, the Central General de Trabajadores (CGT), and the families, friends, and colleagues of all 13 victims.

Given the recent escalation of violence in Honduras, FLA encourages all members sourcing or producing in Honduras to consider additional measures to ensure the safety of workers and union representatives.

WASHINGTON, DC, 28 de junio de 2023 — La Fair Labor Association (FLA) condena el asesinato de cuatro líderes sindicales del Sindicato de Trabajadores de Gildan San Miguel (SITRAGSAM) el 24 de junio en Choloma, Honduras.

Los dirigentes sindicales eran la Presidenta de SITRAGSAM, Xiomara Beatriz Cocas, el ex-Presidente Delmer Josué García, el Delegado José Rufino Ortiz y el Delegado Lester Arnulfo Almendarez.  Eduardo Alexander Meléndez, hijo de la Sra. Cocas, también murió en el atentado, junto con otras ocho personas.

FLA expresa sus condolencias a SITRAGSAM, a la Central General de Trabajadores (CGT) y a las familias, amigos y compañeros de trabajo de las trece víctimas.

Dada la reciente escalada de violencia en Honduras, FLA anima a todos los miembros que se abastecen o producen en Honduras a considerar medidas adicionales para garantizar la seguridad de los trabajadores y de los representantes sindicales.
